“Surrender Friday” Website Launch!

Cheers, Creative Enthusiasts,

After many hours of canoodling, testing and experimentation with the new Squarespace 7 interface, my third website designed and created using the Squarespace platform has launched at www.surrenderfriday.com. This website uses one of their brand new musician interfaces, especially created for bands like us. And I am pleased with the end result. The band Surrender Friday is the rock cover band that I helped conceive over six years ago (along with our awesome bassist and fellow co-founder, Mike Bilello), and have had the pleasure of performing in to this day with these other amazing musicians and artists in their own right. Performing arts is only one step away from creative arts, and I highly enjoy practicing this craft with my fellow bandmates.

If you ever have a need for a website for your company, project, band or next adventure, I invite you to contact Giant Leaps Creative to let us discuss your project with you, and submit a proposal to launch your next big thing!

To your creative endeavors!
Onward and upward.

Thank You, Merci Beaucoup and All That Jazz!

Cheers, Creative Enthusiasts,

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope your year is getting started off wonderfully! To start my year off on the right foot, I would like my first post of the year (and a new tradition here at Giant Leaps Creative for years to come) to be a great big “Thank You” shout out to everyone who is helping make my humble, boutique creative & graphic design business a success! We have only been in business since August of 2014, and the awesome projects and excellent work that makes me come alive just keeps coming through our creative doors. And I could not be more thankful! Let’s get this year started right with these kudos to some amazing people in my life!

Without further ado and in no particular order, I would like to thank:

1) Mike Goncalves – I would not have had the idea to write this post if it were not for my awesome friend, Mike. Mike is part of the welcoming committee for an online course that I took the day I started my business called How To Connect With Anyone. We became fast friends, and we support each other’s missions of happiness, health and doing meaningful work. Mike is doing amazing things with his project, The Wellness Bucket. I cheer you on every day!

2) Scott Dinsmore – Scott is an incredibly inspiring man who is creating his own revolution at Live Your Legend. He is the creator of the course I graduated from that I mentioned above, as well as other courses and products with one mission: to help people all around the world find and do work that they love, work that makes their heart sing. Through his course and lifestyle, he has helped teach me to run my business leading with generosity and gratitude (with a good dose of fun thrown in!). Scott has become an amazing inspiration to me, as well as a friend. And we have also been working on some great projects together, and I hope many more!

3) Naz / Leah – I met these two fine ladies also in the Connect With Anyone (CWA) course mentioned above! (yes, this course is that amazing!) These wonderful women from “down under” led my Mastermind course, which is part of the program where you are paired with other amazing peeps trying to create awesome stuff in the world. They offer their guidance, support and encouragement, and help reframe how you view your challenges. You ladies rock, just like your company Rock Your Purpose, Live!

4) David Nellis / Elliot Dalberg – I spent an incredible and productive 14.5 years getting to know and working alongside these two hard-working and talented men at ROI Advertising. I am humbled and honored to have worked with them, and created and led their art department as Creative Director and Vice President of the company. The skills and techniques that I learned there will serve me for years to come. I am proud to call them my friends and mentors. Elliot’s amazingly talented wife, Marcia Staimer rocks too and just did some awesome illustrative work for me here at Giant Leaps.

5) Jeanne Broadwell – Words cannot describe the mentorship, support and loving guidance I have received from my loving (and gorgeous!) sister Jeanne my entire life. From when she picked me up when I fell down on the playground as a wee tot, to today when she offers advice, inspires me, protects me and cheers me on as I’m carving out a life for myself. She is the best sister anyone could ask for! I am proud to have the pleasure of performing on stage with her and our rock band, The Naughty Naughty Band, that we conceived together.

6) Pauline Goulah – This seemingly fearless, amazing woman started her own graphic design business, Goulah Design Group, about 15 years ago. She worked for me in my creative department way back in the MacVicar Design days, and over the years, we became excellent friends and co-designers, and now are both female entrepreneurs who own our own respective businesses. Thank you, Pauline for showing me how it’s done, girl. You rock!

7) Jensina Olson – My mother-in-law confidently gave me my first client last year, and I can’t thank her enough for it! Landing that first job is so incredibly important. Jensina, who has an amazing reputation from her special occasion catering career, believed in me and without question recommended my services to her client. I loved doing the creative, as well as having the opportunity to work with this amazing woman I am proud to call family.

8) Dr. Daamini Shrivastav – I met this fantastic woman through the wonders of social networking and blogging well over a year ago now. I helped crowdfund an important project she was working on, and we became fast friends. Daamini believed in me and my writing abilities, and my passion for helping other people. And she asked me to help her father’s hospital in the UAE, Conceive by authoring the blog, Slow Swimmers & Fried Eggs that I now write with my husband about our struggles with infertility in an international effort to help others who also struggle. Thanks for believing in me across all of those miles, Daamini. May we meet in 2015 so I can thank you in person!

9) Alivia Tagliaferri – I have known this fabulous woman for years through mutual friends, and always knew she is an outstanding author, writing about causes she believes in. But today, we are now enjoying collaborating our efforts for her upcoming documentary, Power Of One: Preventing Suicide in America, a cause that I stand behind as well. I am honored to assist her with my creative services for her project. She also collaborated with me by conducting an interview for my blog mentioned above. You rock, lady!

10) Rich Rodgers – Rich has been an incredible friend of mine for... wow, almost a decade now. He has hired me numerous times over the years to do creative work for him in his many endeavors. An incredibly smart, diligent and ambitious man, he always has new business ideas up his sleeve with innovative ways to get them implemented. He was one of my first clients here at Giant Leaps Creative, and I have loved every single minute of working with him and his team at TransitSystems. There will be a blog post shortly showcasing the work that we have collaborated on as soon as I get my mitts on his new business cards that I created for him.

11) Bill LeDent – This incredibly talented man has inspired me with his artistic abilities, his strength, and his “I’m going to do this my way” style of living. We have also collaborated on many creative projects and business ideas, and I am constantly amazed at how smart, creative and talented this artist, actor and professor is. He also keeps me laughing and smiling, and reminds me not to take life so seriously, and I love him for that! He also has recently helped us with the above mentioned blog with his video editing ability and great eye for the camera. And he also shares the stage with me with our Naughty Naughty Band. So awesome and fun!

12A) Eric – This post would never be complete without me praising my incredible husband for always being there, believing in me and my abilities, and cheering me on in everything that I do, no matter how “crazy” it is! I could not have started Giant Leaps Creative without him! He loves me so deeply and profoundly that it blows my mind, as well as helps me face any challenges and obstacles knowing that he always “has my back”, and will love me even when I fail. This is how we learn, and this is how we support each other. Thanks for growing, loving and laughing with me, dear husband of mine!

12B) Dad / Mom – To my loving, devoted and fantastic parents, Robert and Frances. They gave me an amazing education back home in the Philadelphia area suburbs, as well as at Penn State and Drexel University, where I got my graphic design degree. They celebrated with me when I graduated with honors, and cheered me on every step of the way throughout my career. They taught me that hard work, dedication and living with integrity pays off, and that nothing can replace the love and support of family and friends. And they gave me my loving and hilarious sister, and loved us both from the bottom of their hearts, until their last days. I miss you, every day! And I carry your light into the future with me.

Giant Leaps Creative would not be where it is today without the love, encouragement and support of these fabulous, inspiring and special people in my life. I thank you in the sincerest way that I know how. And I also thank all of you for reading this post and being here today, supporting one girl’s dream. May you have a fantastic year ahead, and I wish you many happy days!

To your creative endeavors!

Annual Donation from Giant Leaps Creative For a Worthy Cause

Hello, Creative Enthusiasts,

It is my mission here at Giant Leaps Creative to give a portion of our profits to a worthy cause each year. This year, we have selected the documentary film, Power Of One: Preventing Suicide in America, both because it is an incredibly worthy cause, and also because GLC has been hard at work on the logo and other marketing materials, working closely with Alivia Tagliaferri – the director, filmmaker and good friend to yours truly, Cathy Broadwell. I greatly appreciate the work she is doing, and stand beside her furthering this mission.

I would like to invite you to consider helping make the documentary film: Power of One: Preventing Suicide in America a reality by contributing even a small amount, such as $10. Your donation is tax deductible, but you get so much more! Let's not lose more of our friends and family to suicide. Let's help prevent it!

Thank you, Alivia Tagliaferri for your hard work on this documentary.

ONWARD and UPWARD – 2015

Giant Leaps Creative would like to select two charities to give a portion of our profits to in 2015! Would you like to provide your two cents by offering your suggestion? I would like to find a worthy cause that helps children in need, as well as helps take care of all creatures in the form of animals, big and small. Do you already have a favorite charity in that realm that you would like me to consider for 2015? Please write me directly, or simply add a comment below. I highly appreciate your input, and will review each suggestion personally. Once I have made a selection, I will help promote your charity here with details about their mission. Let's team up!

“Kindness” T-shirts for Live Your Legend’s Scott Dinsmore

Cheers, Creative Enthusiasts,

It is a big week over here at Giant Leaps Creative! As I started my business, I stumbled upon a website and blog called, Live Your Legend, and then later decided to take the course How To Connect With Anyone (both created by Scott Dinsmore) to embark on the journey of building business relationships and connections. It has been an extremely rewarding experience – so much so that I had an epiphany and realized that I would like to help Scott on his mission to help others find and do work that they love, creating the legend of their own life.

I approached Scott and offered him my graphic design services in any way that might suit his needs. The first assignment that he gave me was to create inspiring and awesome T-shirt designs for three motivational quotes that he wanted to highlight for his Live Your Legend brand and mission. It has been many weeks of hard work which has now culminated into the first T-shirt offering you see highlighted here. The crowdsourcing campaign just started yesterday! And I am honored and blessed to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing, inspirational and kind man, who truly is creating his own legacy through his work of helping change lives for the better, all around the globe.

In Scott’s own words:

Your shirt is live!! Thousands of you submitted ideas and cast your votes – and here’s our winning Live Your Legend holiday shirt.

To launch our first batch, we’re doing a crowdsourcing campaign – which means that we can only create them if at least 200 of you decide to buy one in the next 9 days. And we likely won’t offer this style again (because we have lots of other cool ones to make :)!

Printed on American Apparel’s premium Tri-Blend fabric making it possibly the softest shirt you’ll ever own.

Most importantly, the shirt serves as a powerful everyday physical anchor to remind yourself to pursue work that matters and make your impact. And when people see you from the back, it will inspire them to do the same!

Just imagine how fun it will be to spot someone else out in the field wearing the same shirt. Bam – instant new friend! Grab one and join us...

You only have until Dec 24th to join the party!

Click here to see the campaign:

________

As Scott states, these T-shirts that I had the exciting experience of designing, are only being offered for a short time. I invite you to take a look, and if you feel so inspired, snag one for yourself or one of your loved ones to spread an inspirational and motivational concept out to the world at large, simply by wearing this super soft T-shirt. Stay tuned for possibly more T-shirts designs created by Giant Leaps Creative for Live Your Legend. T-shirt design rocks! Happy holidays, everyone! Enjoy!

Success! Wedding Materials for a Festive December Wedding

Cheers, Creative Enthusiasts,

The holiday season is upon us. Many of us are still rushing around gathering and creating gifts for our loved ones to share and enjoy. What a wonderful time of year to also share the beauty of the union of two souls. This past weekend, I attended a fantastic celebration of the marriage of two such lovely souls, and I had the honor of creating all of their wedding materials for the festive event.

The ensemble of wedding materials included the invitation itself, the programs for the ceremony, menu cards displayed at the reception in beautiful frames, and earlier was the Save The Date Postcard. The inserts, program and menu cards were all hand…

The ensemble of wedding materials included the invitation itself, the programs for the ceremony, menu cards displayed at the reception in beautiful frames, and earlier was the Save The Date Postcard. The inserts, program and menu cards were all hand-cut for accuracy and consistency.

I worked directly with the wedding planner, the mother of the bride, and the bride herself to help create a one-of-a-kind grouping of pieces for the big day. They described the kind of event that they wanted the wedding day to feel like, expressed to me what colors they wanted as the theme of their wedding, and showed me pictures of the proposed bouquets. Two weeks later, I presented five different design selections for the wedding invitation. The client was extremely pleased with the selection proclaiming such things as:

“I am absolutely ‘floored!’ I never dreamed that my daughter’s invitations would be so beautiful and so unusual! I do not think I realized what a ‘custom invitation’ meant. Goodness, now we have to choose!”

“The invitations are all beautiful. You are magic. What a fantastic job you have done. I am so grateful, and thrilled to know that Cathy has designed invitations that have created such joy. Bravo!”

“My daughter is ‘over the moon,’ she is so excited!!!! Your designs make us feel that ‘yes, we are going to have a wedding!’ Many thanks to you!”

Programs displayed at back of the church for the ceremony, which were later handed out by the ushers (and myself when needed).

It brings me great satisfaction to help create happiness and elation using my graphic design skills to bring a momentous event to life. Building relationships with my clients, connecting with their aspirations and truly listening to their hopes and dreams with the mission is what it is all about. A wedding day is a day to be cherished, remembered and celebrated. And the invitation can truly set the tone for the wonders of the big day, and help create continuity and yes, magic. I am delighted and honored to assist in creating such a fantastic experience, along with the other wedding coordinators. It truly is a team effort.

Menu cards displayed in beautiful frames at guest’s tables to inform them of the delights that they are about to eat. The design carries the theme of the other wedding materials through to complete the ensemble of pieces.

As a gift to the bride and groom, I also offered to sing a special song at a time of their choosing. I enjoy ‘the arts’ in general, and am also a musician and singer. I elected to sing the song “At Last” as performed by the incredible and stupendous Etta James. It was a joy to sing it, as it was to watch the bride and groom gaze into each other’s eyes as they danced their first dance.

Also, as an added bonus for my clients, I can offer a 10% discount on any needed materials from one of my favorite suppliers, Envelopments, as I am an Authorized Dealer for their gorgeous products. I selected their “Magestic Brocade” paper selections for this event.

Can I help create your custom materials for your special event? I invite you to contact me so that I can offer a free consultation and price quote for any of your design needs. Happy holidays, everyone!

Cook To Connect Logo and Challenge

Hello, Creative Enthusiasts,

Giant Leaps Creative LLC is excited and happy to help The Simple Kitchen promote it’s new Cook To Connect challenge, just in time for the holidays! The mission of Cook To Connect is to provide an incentive for loved ones to connect with each other, one meal at a time, as we have stated in the logo we just created featured on The Simple Kitchen's website.

In Chelsea Dinsmore’s own words, here is an explanation:

What is Cook to Connect? An experience designed to bring people together in the kitchen to create simple, healthy meals. The FREE Cook to Connect Challenge provides all you will need to prepare one meal a day for 10 days with a partner (spouse, child, friend, roommate,etc.). It’s designed for 2 people but you can easily double or triple the recipes to fit a larger family or group. You’ll receive:

  • Recipes for 10 simple, healthy meals for two (lunch or dinner, your choice!)
  • A complete shopping list, divided by ingredients to make for quick and easy shopping
  • Step-by-Step instructions for each person’s role in the meal prep process
  • Access to a personal sous chef for help with any questions and/or modifications
  • Post challenge recipes delivered directly to your inbox

How does it work? This guide includes 10 recipes appropriate for lunch and/or dinner and two shopping lists. The idea is that you’ll cook together over a 10 day period beginning on January 5, but the shopping lists are broken up to give you some flexibility. Here is the timeline to give you an idea:

  • Today: Sign up and confirmation email
  • January 2: You’ll receive an email with the complete shopping list 1 so you can get your shopping done over the weekend
  • January 5 – Program begins! There is a ton of flexibility so take it at your own pace but the materials are laid out as if you would begin on January 5 and end on January 15.
  • January 7 – Check in and shopping list 2
  • January 15 – Program ends and virtual high five!

Ready to join us on January 5th? Sign up here!

Power Of One: Preventing Suicide In America

Hello, Creative Enthusiasts,

I would like to celebrate (Whoot! Whoot!) and announce the new logo design that I had the honor of creating for author and friend Alivia Tagliaferri and her upcoming documentary Power Of One: Preventing Suicide In America. Every 15 minutes, someone in America dies by suicide. This documentary explores the risk factors and features the people trying to prevent it.

I firmly believe in the cause of suicide prevention as it relates both to Americans and anyone on our lovely planet. I am also very sympathetic to the various causes of suicide, such as depression, disease, feelings of desperation from financial loss, or social persecution of any kind. I have not personally lost anyone to suicide to date, but many of my close friends and families have. And I know many that suffer from bouts of depression and mental illness, including some of my own family members. I was also deeply sad when I learned of Robin Williams (one of my comic heroes) untimely and sad loss with his battle with depression.

Reaching for hope is partly the inspiration for the iconic graphic at the center of the new Power Of One logo, with the hand reaching for an artistic heart representing love and support. We chose the cheerful colors to be uplifting, inspiring and powerful. I made sure to include stars to anchor the tagline, as well as pay homage to the theme of focusing on our nation. The below quote sums up how Alivia feels about her mission on this documentary:

“The life I touch for good or ill will touch another, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops, or in what far place my touch will be felt. Our lives are linked together. No man is an island.”
-- Frederick Buechner, “The Hungering Dark”

Here is Alivia’s description of her upcoming documentary:

Power of One: Preventing Suicide in America is a feature documentary about suicide and suicide prevention. The title and program reflect the profound impact we have on the lives of those around us. We feel this impact acutely when we lose a love one to suicide; we also feel its reverberations when one person helps prevent suicide.

Power of One will address complicated root causes and contributing factors of suicide, but also share stories of hope, resiliency, recovery and prevention.

Our focal areas include:
• teenagers and young adults

• the LBGT community
• military service members and families
• former sports players and middle aged men
• veterans
• senior citizens and elderly

Her goal: Create an informative, insightful and nuanced documentary to be utilized as an anchor for national outreach to talk to Americans about suicide and suicide prevention.

_______

Cathy here again. I am looking forward to having Alivia as a client and working on future projects with her in the coming weeks. Alivia's company Ironcutter Media and Giant Leaps Creative are teaming up on this project to do our part to help better the lives of Americans!

To your creative endeavors!
Onward and upward.

Android Marketing Campaign 2014: Love it or hate it?

Hello, Creative Enthusiasts,

I recently saw this Android phone commercial, and it brought a smile to my face. I enjoy where Android is going with their marketing campaign, "Be together. Not the Same." Why? I loved the creativity, the fast-paced action, the humor, the inclusiveness and fun of it (vs. the exclusive and "hipster" feeling of other marketing campaigns, such as Apple), and yes, I loved the addition of the same sex marriage proposal. I recently attended my first same sex wedding (which was totally awesome, btw!), and I liked the forward thinking aspect of this advertisement. A depiction of a gay relationship is still relatively taboo in the advertising industry, and most companies are probably still too nervous to go that route. Kudos to Android for taking the brave step and breaking the mold.

Check it out for yourself if you have not seen it...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRmgMe2STL0

What is your first reaction to the commercial? Love it or hate it? I did see there is quite a bit of controversy online about this ad. I think it's great to get people talking! What do you think?

Tipping My Hat To A Favorite Teacher, John Langdon

Hello, Creative Enthusiasts,

“I came and went through the doors of perception so often that they just started leaving them open for me.”

We’ve all had them – those favorite teachers in our past, whether it was from college or grade school, this subject or that subject. My latest post here at Giant Leaps Creative, I would like to honor one of my favorite teachers from my college days at Drexel University, John Langdon. John was my laid-back, super “cool”, but wow-did-he-know-his-stuff typography / graphic design teacher. When I was young, scared, nervous, wondering if I chose the correct profession / major, John helped me feel at ease in my decision, and made everything about learning graphic design and typography fun, challenging and exciting. I knew I would always remember him, and always have.

I went about my career, climbing my way up the corporate ladder, leading all the way up to starting my own graphic design studio here at Giant Leaps Creative, and I attribute much of my success to the wonderful people like John who helped guide me here, cheering me on every step of the way. And I thank every single person that has had a positive influence on me.

I have one very fond moment of my career I had no idea had anything to do with my career at all. I was dating my husband at the time who told me one of his favorite books of all time was Angels and Demons. So one Sunday, I borrowed his copy of the book while he ran errands and did chores. From that moment on, I was glued to the couch, turning page after exciting page. I barely got up to eat or use the facilities. I was enamored with both the story and these gorgeous, mesmerizing ambigrams that were woven into the story. (Ambigrams are works of art that read the same upside down as they do right-side up – and in the book, they were “chilling” and frightful, as much as they were beautiful.) They spoke to me partly because I had studied ambigrams at Drexel under John Langdon. When I graduated, John had given me a signed copy of his new at the time book entitled “Wordplay” which of course had an ambigram right on the cover. I will admit here that I never read the book, but did page through it to look at all of the pretty pictures, as artists often do. I still have it on my bookshelf in my office / studio to this day.

I found it quite curious as I furiously read the book that the main character had the same last name as my esteemed teacher. Hmmm, I kept reading. Another mind-blowing ambigram, and then another. My mind was racing. Could it be? After I was about two thirds of the way through the book, I couldn’t take it any longer. I fast forwarded to the end to see if there were any credits. And lo and behold, a man with my teacher’s namesake was credited with creating all of the ambigrams for the book. It had to be my teacher! I screamed upstairs to tell the news and my suspicions to my boyfriend (who was soon to become my husband later on in life). We were both so excited, me especially of course. I finished the book with even more interest, which was hard to do. Frankly, this is also one of my favorite books of all time now, and in my humble opinion, it is much better than The Da Vinci Code, which Dan Brown is even more famous for writing. Please pick up a copy and give yourself a treat, if you like that sort of thing.

Here is an excerpt from John’s website that describes what I discovered that day as I was mesmerized by both the beautiful typography and the main character’s name:

Robert Langdon is an amalgam of many people I admire. In the early 1990′s, I first saw the art work of John Langdon. John is an artist and philosopher, a close friend of my father and, I think, one of our true geniuses. He is most famous for his ability to create “ambigrams” – words that read the same both right side up and up side down (see, for example, his book Wordplay. John’s art changed the way I think about symmetry, symbols, and art – he looks at [everything] from different perspectives. I was so impressed by the artwork of John Langdon that I commissioned him to create an album cover for my new CD of music (called Angels & Demons), which dealt with many of the religious themes that already interested me. John did the artwork, and the CD was released in 1999 with John’s ambigram on the cover. Later, when I published a novel of the same name, Simon & Schuster used the same ambigram on the hardcover edition.

John and his name were part of the inspiration for the protagonist of Angels & Demons (Robert Langdon) who also appears in The Da Vinci Code and in my next, as yet unpublished, book. John also created the ambigrams used in Angels & Demons. I commissioned him to create ambigrams for the word “illuminati”, as well as the Illuminati diamond — the fusion of the elements, earth, air, fire and water, which represents the fusion of science and religion historically, and features in Angels & Demons.

– Dan Brown

Thank you, John Langdon, for being such an inspirational teacher, mentor and friend. And thanks for always cheering me on in both my life and my career from afar. I think it is important for you to know how much you have touched my mind and my heart. Sending much happy karma and good thoughts your way. And thank you, Facebook for making it so easy for me to keep tabs on some of my favorite people of all time, and connecting us again.
